Short answer: A four-day Scottsdale buddies trip means four rounds, one a day — thirty-six holes in a day looks good in the group chat and is a bad idea by the second afternoon. Two decisions make or break it: stay in North Scottsdale where most of the best public golf is, because an Old Town house costs you 25–40 minutes each way to every 7am tee time; and write the money format down on day one, settling each day's game at lunch rather than the whole week on Sunday. Book tee times 60–90 days out for the October–April season.

Scottsdale is the most popular buddies-trip destination in America for a reason: dozens of genuinely good public courses inside 30 minutes of each other, dry heat, and a town built to feed golfers at 7pm. It is also where groups quietly waste half their trip — staying in Old Town for the nightlife and then driving 40 minutes north to every tee time. This plan fixes the geography first, then the money, then the golf: four rounds in four days, one bucket-list course, one walkable day, and a format that keeps the last round meaningful.

Day 1 · ThursdayLand, a range session, and the money meeting

Do not book a round on arrival day unless everyone lands before 10am. A blown tee time with twelve players costs real money.

TimeStopNotes for the group
11:00Land at Phoenix Sky Harbor3400 E Sky Harbor Blvd, PhoenixTwenty-five to thirty-five minutes to North Scottsdale. Rent two SUVs rather than one van — you will split into two foursome groups constantly, and one vehicle is a bottleneck every single morning.Travel light. Arizona is dry: pack a layer for evenings, which drop 30 degrees after sunset in winter.
12:30Grocery run, then check inNorth ScottsdaleStay in North Scottsdale, not Old Town. Most of the best public golf is up here, and a house near the courses turns a 35-minute morning drive into ten minutes. If the group insists on walking to bars every night, accept that you are trading it for an hour of driving a day — and know that going in.
2:00Range session and a nine, if there is timeYour local range or an executive courseDesert golf is a different game: the ball flies further in dry air, and target lines are narrower than anything you play at home. An hour on the range on day one saves three days of blaming the course.Sun shirt with sleeves, a hat, and sunglasses. Even in January the Arizona sun at altitude is stronger than it feels.
5:00The money meeting — fifteen minutes, before dinnerDo this sober and do it once. Set the format for the week, the stakes per man per day, who is holding the pot, and how it settles. A simple structure that works: a daily game, plus a week-long team competition, plus one individual side pot. Write it down where everyone can read it, because the argument on Sunday is always about a rule nobody wrote down on Thursday.
7:00Dinner in Old Town or at the houseOld Town ScottsdaleOne night out in Old Town is the right dose. Book a table for the full group — a walk-in party of twelve on a Thursday in season is a 90-minute wait.Golf-casual is the uniform of this entire town and nobody will notice.

Day 2 · FridayThe bucket-list round

Play the big course on the first full day: everyone is fresh, nobody is hungover yet, and if weather moves you have three days to reschedule.

TimeStopNotes for the group
6:15Coffee and out the doorEat at the house. A group of twelve cannot reliably eat breakfast in a restaurant and make a tee time, and the starter does not care why you are late.Layers you can shed by the turn. A 7am January tee time in Scottsdale is 45 degrees and the back nine is 70.
7:00Arrive 45 minutes before the tee timeTPC Scottsdale Stadium Course, 17020 N Hayden Rd — or We-Ko-Pa, Troon North, or GrayhawkThe bucket-list options: TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course (home of the WM Phoenix Open and the famous 16th), We-Ko-Pa Saguaro (walkable, minimalist, no houses on it — the purist's pick), We-Ko-Pa Cholla, Troon North Pinnacle, and Grayhawk Raptor. Book tee times 60–90 days out for peak season, and confirm the group booking policy: most premium courses want a deposit and a firm headcount for more than eight players. Two gloves if you sweat, a towel, and more water than you think. Take a cart-side water bottle and refill at every station.
7:45Tee offTwo foursomes or three, scorecards assigned, format confirmed on the first tee. Not the fourth hole.
12:30Lunch at the clubhouseSit down and settle the day's game at the table while everyone remembers what happened. Settling three days of golf on Sunday morning is how disputes start.
3:00Pool and napThe houseThis is the afternoon the whole plan protects. Four consecutive rounds is a lot of golf for most amateurs, and the group that drinks through Friday afternoon plays badly for three days.
7:30Dinner at the house — steaks on the grillCheaper, easier, and better than a restaurant with twelve people. Assign two cooks and two cleaners by name, rotating nightly. An unassigned kitchen in a golf house is a mess with a reputation.

Day 3 · SaturdayRound two, and the one afternoon that is not golf

Mid-trip is where a buddies trip either finds its rhythm or turns into four guys resenting the other eight.

TimeStopNotes for the group
6:30Out the doorSame drill. Coffee at the house, everyone in two cars, nobody waiting on a straggler.Layers, again.
7:30Round twoA second course 15–20 minutes from the housePlay something different in character from Friday: if Friday was a championship course with houses on it, make Saturday a desert layout with none. Grayhawk Talon, We-Ko-Pa Cholla, Boulders South, and Eagle Mountain all fit, and all take a group.Sunscreen reapplied at the turn. Everyone forgets and everyone burns on day three.
1:00Lunch, settle the day's gameSame discipline as yesterday. Post the running totals where everyone can see them.
3:30The non-golf afternoonPick one. This is what keeps a twelve-man group friendly:
3:30Option A: Old Town and the Camelback areaOld Town ScottsdaleWalkable bars, patios, and a group dinner at the end. The default, and the reason some groups stay down here.
3:30Option B: a hike, for whoever wants onePinnacle Peak Trail, 26802 N 102nd WayNinety minutes, real views, and it costs nothing. Tom's Thumb is the harder option. Go early or late — midday hikes in Arizona are genuinely dangerous, and rangers will turn you around in summer. Two liters of water per person, minimum. Not a suggestion.
3:30Option C: Top Golf, a spring training game, or the SunsIn February and March, a Cactus League spring training game is one of the best afternoons in American sports and tickets are cheap. Fifteen ballparks inside 45 minutes.
8:00Big group dinner outOld Town or North ScottsdaleThe one nice meal of the trip. Book it before you leave home, and put one name on the reservation and one card behind the bar.

Day 4 · SundayThe closing round, settle up, fly out

Make the last round matter. A week-long team format with the match still alive on Sunday is the difference between a golf trip and four rounds of golf.

TimeStopNotes for the group
6:45Pack before you playBags in the cars, checkout done, house cleaned before the first tee. Nobody wants to drive back from a course to strip beds.Travel clothes in the car, golf clothes on.
7:45Closing roundA course on the airport side of townPick something 20–30 minutes from Sky Harbor so the post-round drive is short: the Phoenix-side and Papago-area municipals are good, cheap, and fast. Play the team match to a finish and settle the week at the 19th hole.Sunscreen. Last day, same sun.
1:00Settle the pot, buy the winner's lunchAll of it, in person, before anyone drives to the airport. One person pays out, in cash or one app, with the running sheet on the table.
3:00Return the cars and fly homeTwenty-five to thirty-five minutes to Sky Harbor from most of Scottsdale. Clubs at the oversized counter, and give yourself an extra 30 minutes for them.

The two decisions that make or break a Scottsdale golf trip: Stay where the golf is. Most of Scottsdale's best public courses are in the north end of town, and a house in Old Town means 25–40 minutes each way to every 7am tee time, four days running. And write the money format down on day one — a daily game, a week-long team match, one side pot, with running totals posted where everyone can see them. Settle each day's game at lunch, not the whole week on Sunday.

Questions groups ask about a Scottsdale golf trip

How many rounds should you play on a golf trip?

One a day, four rounds in four days, for a group of mixed ability. Thirty-six in a day looks great on the group chat and is a bad idea by the second afternoon — amateurs in desert heat lose two shots a round to fatigue and the back nine of a second round is nobody's best golf. Book four rounds and let anyone who wants a twilight nine add it themselves.

When is the best time for a Scottsdale golf trip?

October through April, and that is also when it is most expensive and most booked. February and March are peak — perfect weather, the WM Phoenix Open, and Cactus League spring training all at once — so tee times and houses need 60–90 days of lead time or more. May and late September are the value windows: hot but playable, with early tee times, at a fraction of peak rates. June through August is genuinely dangerous heat by mid-morning, and the discount reflects that.

Which Scottsdale courses should a group actually play?

The ones groups fly in for are TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course (the WM Phoenix Open venue, with the stadium 16th), We-Ko-Pa Saguaro and Cholla out on Fort McDowell land, Troon North Pinnacle and Monument, Grayhawk Raptor and Talon, and Boulders. A good week is one bucket-list round, two very good rounds, and one cheap fast round on the way to the airport. Mix the character of the courses — playing four resort championship layouts in a row blurs together.

Where should a golf group stay in Scottsdale?

A rental house in North Scottsdale, near Kierland or Troon. Most of the best public golf is up there, a house is cheaper per head than rooms once you have eight-plus players, and having a kitchen and a grill means you eat two dinners at home for the price of one out. Old Town is the trade-off everyone debates: great walkable nightlife, and 25–40 minutes to your tee times every morning. Pick your priority honestly rather than hoping for both.

How do you handle money on a buddies golf trip?

Collect one flat number per player before anyone flies, covering the house, the cars, and the green fees, and have one person reconcile it — chasing twelve guys for a share of a green fee after the trip is a thankless job. Keep golf bets completely separate from trip costs: a daily game settled at lunch, one week-long team match, one individual side pot, running totals posted where everyone can see them. Write the rules and stakes down on day one. Every dispute on a golf trip traces back to a format somebody assumed.
