Short answer: Five days and four nights is the smallest Walt Disney World trip that does not feel like a forced march: four park days, one park per day, and a genuine rest day in the middle with no ticket at all. The three rules that keep it happy are one park a day, a midday break on every park day (leave at noon, return at 4:30), and rope drop at only the two parks that reward it — Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Ticket and Lightning Lane rules change often; confirm before booking.

Every Disney World plan on the internet is optimized for rides per hour. That is why so many families come home needing a vacation. This plan is optimized for the last day still being fun: one park a day, a genuine rest day in the middle, two early mornings rather than five, and a short honest list of what is worth paying extra for. Built for kids 4–12, five days and four nights, staying on property.

Day 1 · SundayArrive, settle, Disney Springs — no park

Do not buy a park ticket for arrival day. It is the most commonly regretted decision in Disney planning.

TimeStopWhat to wear
11:30Land at Orlando International1 Jeff Fuqua Blvd, OrlandoUnder 20 miles to the resort. Disney's own airport transfer no longer runs as it once did, so book a car service with car seats, a rideshare, or the Sunshine Flyer/Mears shuttle in advance.Travel light on top — you will land into 85 degrees and humidity even in November.
1:00Check in and get your bands sortedYour Disney resort hotelDo the unglamorous things now: link every ticket in the app, confirm everyone can log in, charge every phone bank, and find your bus stop. All four of those go wrong at 7am tomorrow otherwise.
3:00Resort poolYour hotel poolThree hours in the water. This is not a wasted afternoon — it is what makes a 7am wake-up survivable tomorrow.Swimsuits in the carry-on, not the checked bag. This is the single best Disney packing tip there is.
6:00Disney Springs1486 Buena Vista Dr, Lake Buena VistaNo ticket required. Dinner, the enormous Lego store, and a boat ride if there is one going. Book a table two months out or plan on a quick-service counter — walk-in waits here run past 90 minutes.Comfortable shoes. Disney Springs is bigger than it looks and this is already a two-mile evening.
8:30Back to the resort, early nightLay out tomorrow's clothes, pack the park bag, and set two alarms. Everyone in bed by 9:30.

Day 2 · MondayMagic Kingdom — the one park worth an early alarm

Magic Kingdom is the park where arriving at opening is worth more than any amount of money you can spend later in the day.

TimeStopWhat to wear
6:30Up, fed, and outYour resortEat in the room — granola bars and fruit you brought or had delivered. Waiting for a resort restaurant will cost you the morning.Rain jacket or a poncho in the bag from June through September, guaranteed. A hat and sunscreen every single day.
7:45Be at the tapstilesMagic Kingdom, 1180 Seven Seas Dr, Lake Buena VistaResort guests get Early Theme Park Entry — 30 minutes before official open. Arrive 60–75 minutes before the posted time to clear bag check, the monorail or ferry, and the walk. By 9:30 you can have three headline rides done, and that is the whole trip's high-water mark.
8:15Ride hard for two hoursStraight to the back: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Peter Pan's Flight first — the two that develop the worst lines and the fewest alternatives. Then Space Mountain or Big Thunder. Do not stop for a photo with a character until after 10:30.
11:00Mobile order lunch, earlyOrder on the app while you are still in a queue and eat at 11. Every quick-service restaurant in the park is a scrum between 12 and 1:30.
12:30Leave the park and go swimYour resort poolYes, in the middle of the day, on purpose. Afternoons are hot, crowded, and full of thunderstorms. This midday break is the actual strategy of the entire itinerary — the families who skip it are the ones fighting by Wednesday.Pool clothes. Leave the park bag packed so re-entry takes ten minutes.
4:30Back into the parkA second, calmer pass: Pirates, the Haunted Mansion, the Jungle Cruise, the Carousel of Progress if you need air conditioning and a sit.A light layer for after dark — January and February evenings genuinely get cold.
8:00Fireworks, then outWatch from Main Street for the full projection show, or from the hub grass if you want to leave fast. Either way, walk out during the last two minutes rather than with 20,000 other people.

Day 3 · TuesdayRest day — and it is not optional

A five-day trip with five park days is a four-day trip with one bad day at the end. Protect this.

TimeStopWhat to wear
Sleep inNo alarmsWhoever wakes up first takes whoever wakes up second to the pool. Everyone else sleeps.
10:30Resort morningYour resortMost resorts run free activities — crafts, bike rentals, campfires, a movie on the lawn after dark. Ask at the desk on arrival day and write the times down.Swimsuits, and sunscreen even though you are 'not doing anything.'
12:30Lunch at the resort or a resort hopA free monorail ride to the Grand Floridian or the Polynesian for lunch is a genuinely great Disney afternoon that costs a ticket to nothing.
2:30Optional: a water parkTyphoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach, 1145 E Buena Vista DrA separate ticket, and the best value on property for a family that likes water. Half a day is plenty.Water shoes — the walkways get blisteringly hot. Rash guards over sunscreen.
6:30Laundry and a real dinnerUnromantic and load-bearing: a load of laundry tonight means you packed half as much, and everyone has a dry swimsuit tomorrow.

Day 4 · WednesdayHollywood Studios or EPCOT — the second and last early morning

Pick one. Hollywood Studios if your kids are Star Wars-or-Toy-Story aged; EPCOT if they are older, or if the adults want to eat and drink their way around the world.

TimeStopWhat to wear
7:15Rope drop, round twoHollywood Studios (351 S Studio Dr) needs it more than any park except Magic Kingdom: Slinky Dog Dash and Rise of the Resistance define the day. EPCOT (200 Epcot Center Dr) is gentler — Guardians of the Galaxy and Frozen Ever After first, then the rest of the park will wait for you.Same drill: hat, sunscreen, poncho, refillable bottles.
11:30Early lunch, mobile orderedAt EPCOT, skip the sit-down and eat your way around World Showcase in small plates — it is the best food on property and it keeps everyone moving.
1:30Midday breakBack to the pool if the park is more than a bus ride away; a long air-conditioned show if it is not. At EPCOT, Turtle Talk and the aquarium at The Seas are a legitimate hour of shade.
5:00Evening in the parkThis is the best two hours of the day at both parks: cooler, emptier, and the lighting is better for photos than anything at noon.A light layer for after sunset.
8:00Nighttime show, then outLeave during the finale. Ten minutes early saves 45 minutes of bus queue, every single time.

Day 5 · ThursdayAnimal Kingdom morning, then fly home

Animal Kingdom is the right last park: it opens early, empties by mid-afternoon, and nobody minds leaving.

TimeStopWhat to wear
8:00Animal Kingdom2901 Osceola Pkwy, Bay LakeFlight of Passage first if anyone is tall enough and brave enough — it builds the longest line on property. Then Kilimanjaro Safaris, which is genuinely better in the cooler morning because the animals are actually out.Neutral colors and a hat for the safari; closed-toe shoes for the trails.
11:00Gorilla Falls trail and lunchSatu'li Canteen in Pandora is the best quick-service food at Walt Disney World, and that is not a close contest.
1:00Leave the parkBack to the resort, shower, change, repack. Confirm your airport transfer time before you sit down.Travel clothes, and the bulkiest shoes on the plane.
3:30Head to MCOLeave three hours before a domestic flight from here. Orlando's security lines are the worst part of any Disney trip and they are worse on a Thursday afternoon.

The three rules that keep a Disney trip happy: One park a day (park hopping sounds efficient and costs you two hours in transit), a midday break every single park day (leave at noon, come back at 4:30), and a real rest day in the middle with no ticket at all. Beyond that: rope drop the two parks that reward it and sleep in at the others, book your Lightning Lane selections the morning they open to you, and mobile-order every meal an hour before you want to eat it.

Questions families ask about Walt Disney World

How many days do you need at Walt Disney World?

Five days and four nights is the smallest trip that does not feel like a forced march: four park days, one rest day, one park per day. Six or seven nights is genuinely better if you can, because it buys a second rest day rather than a fifth park. Fewer than four park days and you should cut a park rather than hop between two in a day.

Is Lightning Lane Multi Pass worth it?

For most families on a five-day trip, yes at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, and it is much less necessary at EPCOT and Animal Kingdom. It is not a substitute for arriving at opening — it is what you use from mid-morning onward once rope drop has banked your two hardest rides. Availability for the most popular attractions goes days in advance, so make your selections the moment your booking window opens, and treat any individual single-attraction purchase as a separate decision on the day. Ticket and Lightning Lane rules change often, so confirm the current structure on Disney's site before you plan around it.

Do you need to book park reservations?

For standard date-based tickets, Disney dropped the park-pass reservation requirement for most guests, so on most days you simply pick a park and go. Some ticket types and some dates still carry requirements, and this is exactly the kind of rule that changes year to year — check your specific ticket in My Disney Experience before you build a day around a park.

What is the best time of year to go to Disney World with kids?

Late January through mid-February, September after Labor Day, and the first week of December: lower crowds, shorter lines, and temperatures you can walk in. Avoid the weeks around Christmas and New Year, spring break, and July — not because they are unpleasant in theory, but because a family of four in a 90-minute queue in 95-degree heat is a different trip than the one you booked.

Is it worth staying at a Disney resort hotel?

For a first trip with young kids, usually yes — the 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry, free transportation so nobody drives or parks, and being ten minutes from a pool at noon are what make the midday-break strategy in this plan possible. Off-site condos are genuinely better value for a larger group, more space, and a kitchen, at the cost of a rental car and a longer midday round trip.
