Chicago 4-day family itinerary (with kids)
This is a field-tested 4-day Chicago itinerary for a family with young kids (ours were 9, 7, and 3): a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, the Architecture River Cruise, Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park, a Lake Michigan beach hour, Lincoln Park Zoo, and two different pizza traditions — organized so no day crosses more than two neighborhoods, with built-in rest blocks and a what-to-wear note for every stop. Every time and address below is real; adjust to your own dates and appetite.
Day 1 · WednesdayArrival, Wicker Park, and a Cubs game
Land, settle, and end at Wrigley — a night game is the perfect first-day anchor because the morning stays unscheduled.
| Time | Stop | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| 10:10 | Land at O'HareO'Hare International AirportCollect bags, then Uber/Lyft to the rental (25–40 min). No rental car — parking is cost and hassle. | Slip-on shoes for security, light layers — O'Hare AC is arctic, July Chicago is not. |
| 11:40 | Lunch: Small Cheval1732 N Milwaukee Ave, Wicker ParkCasual burgers, fries, shakes — a better first-day fit than a long sit-down meal. | Come as you are. |
| 12:45 | Explore Wicker ParkMilwaukee / Damen / North AveMyopic Books, local shops, and the Wicker Park playground (1425 N Damen). Shorten if the kids need downtime. | Sneakers and sun hats; sunscreen before you head out. |

| 4:15 | Wrigleyville pregameGallagher Way, 3635 N Clark StMarquee photos and the Cubs Team Store before the crowd peaks. | Cubs gear if you've got it — gaps can be fixed at the Team Store. |

| 9:30 | Back to the rentalPickup is easier a few blocks from the stadium. No postgame dinner needed. |
Day 2 · ThursdayRiver cruise, Millennium Park, beach, deep-dish
The big downtown day — front-load the booked things, then let the afternoon breathe.

Questions families ask about this plan
Is 4 days enough for Chicago with kids?
Yes, if you cluster by neighborhood and protect rest blocks. This plan covers Wrigley Field, the river cruise, Millennium and Maggie Daley Parks, a beach hour, and Lincoln Park Zoo without any day exceeding two neighborhoods. With kids under 10, more than that per day backfires.
Do you need a rental car in Chicago?
No — skip it. Parking is expensive and stressful, and rideshares plus the occasional CTA train cover everything in this itinerary. Budget roughly $15–30 per rideshare hop for a family of five.
What's the best neighborhood for a family to stay in Chicago?
This itinerary is based in Wicker Park: quieter than downtown, great food, a playground, and 15–25 minutes by rideshare from every stop in the plan. River North and Lincoln Park work on the same logic — pick a real neighborhood over a Loop hotel.
Which deep-dish pizza should we choose with kids?
Pequod's in Lincoln Park — caramelized-crust pan pizza that adults rate and kids actually eat. On another night, Piece Brewery in Wicker Park serves New Haven-style thin crust so you're not repeating yourself.
