TripSanity vs TripIt: an honest comparison

By Eric Johnson, founder of TripSanity — we make one of these two, and this page says so plainly Updated October 2026 · facts re-verified quarterly

TL;DR: TripIt is the best tool ever built for one traveler's logistics — forward your confirmation emails, get a master itinerary, and (on Pro) flight alerts that beat the airline's. But it's structurally a solo tool: others can view your trip, not participate in it. TripSanity is the opposite shape: a live shared trip the whole group opens by link — no accounts — with check-offs, meet points, packing lists, and a family map. Frequent flyer managing bookings: TripIt. One organizer running a multi-household trip: TripSanity. Some people rightly use both.

What TripIt does better

Two things, and it's not close. First, ingestion: forward any confirmation email — flight, hotel, rental car — and TripIt parses it into a clean master itinerary with essentially no effort; twenty years of parser tuning shows (though users still report gaps on ferries and unusual confirmations). Second, the travel day: TripIt Pro's flight alerts, gate-change pings, and fare-refund monitoring are genuinely valuable to anyone who flies often. TripSanity Pro now shows live status and pushes delay and gate alerts for the group's flights too (October 2026), but it watches the flights on the trip, not every flight you take, and it doesn't do fare-refund monitoring. If your pain is "too many confirmation emails, and airports keep surprising me," TripIt earns its $49/year.

What TripSanity does that TripIt doesn't try to

Everything social about a trip. TripIt's shared trip is a window: others can look at your itinerary. TripSanity's trip is a room: every guest sees today's plan and what's next, checks things off with their name attached, adds to the shared packing and grocery lists, finds the meet point at the museum, sees what to wear against the live forecast, opts into the family map when the group scatters, and gets the Wrapped-style recap when it's over. Mid-trip changes propagate to every phone. And the structural bit: none of those guests ever creates an account — one organizer signs in with an emailed code, everyone else is just a link.

The import difference, honestly

TripIt's email-forwarding is more automatic when your trip is made of bookings. TripSanity's paste-based AI import is more universal: it eats email threads, Word-doc itineraries, travel-agent PDFs, and notes-app fragments — the stuff that was never a confirmation email — and turns them into structured, editable days. High booking volume: TripIt. A plan that lives in prose: TripSanity.

Who should choose which

Choose TripIt if…

  • You fly often, mostly on your own, and want best-in-class flight alerts with refund monitoring
  • Your trips are mostly your own bookings, not a group's plan
  • You want zero-effort email ingestion
  • Others only need to see your itinerary, not join it

Choose TripSanity if…

  • You're the organizer of a group that needs to participate
  • Your guests won't install apps or make accounts — and shouldn't have to
  • You want the trip itself to run on rails: check-offs, meet points, attire, the map, the money
  • You'd rather pay $19 once for the big trip than subscribe

The both-tools pattern is real: TripIt for your flights and personal logistics, TripSanity for the group's shared week. They don't overlap much.

Give the whole group the trip, not just the itinerary. One live link — no accounts, nothing to install.

Common questions

Is TripIt good for group trips?

It's a solo organizer's tool — others can view a shared trip (no account needed to view, to its credit) but can't collaborate: no shared check-offs, checklists, expense splitting, live location, or group editing.

Does TripSanity import reservations from email like TripIt?

By paste, not forwarding: copy any text — confirmation emails included — into the AI importer and it builds editable days and stops with reservation badges. Forwarding is more hands-off; pasting covers more kinds of plans.

Which is cheaper, TripIt Pro or TripSanity Pro?

TripIt Pro $49/year vs TripSanity Pro $19 one-time per trip, both with usable free tiers. Frequent flyers amortize the subscription; occasional group organizers usually don't.

Can my group use TripSanity without downloading anything?

Yes — that's the design. Guests open a link in the browser they already have, enter the trip password, and they're in. No app store, no sign-up.
