TripSanity vs the group chat: where your trip plan actually lives

By Eric Johnson, founder of TripSanity — and a member of too many trip group chats Updated October 2026

Short answer: The group chat — WhatsApp, iMessage, GroupMe, whichever yours is — is the most popular trip planner in the world, and for good reason: everyone is already in it, and it reaches every phone. It's unbeatable for talking and deciding. It's bad at being the plan, because the plan turns into one message somewhere above four hundred others. Don't replace the chat. Put the plan somewhere that stays put — one live TripSanity link, shared in the chat — and let the chat go back to being the chat.

What the group chat does better than any app (including ours)

Nobody has to be convinced to open it. That alone beats every trip app ever made, ours included. The chat is where the group's personality lives — the running jokes, the aunt who replies to everything with a GIF, the cousin who only surfaces to ask what time dinner is. It notifies everyone by default, so "we're leaving in ten" actually lands. And the chats have grown up: WhatsApp has polls with up to 12 options, group events people can RSVP to, and pinned messages; GroupMe has polls and events; iMessage added polls in iOS 26, as long as everyone in the conversation is on iMessage with iOS 26 or later.

For deciding things — dates, the house, whether it's a beach trip or a mountain trip — a poll in the chat is often all you need. TripSanity has no polls at all, and doesn't try to be a chat.

Where the plan gets lost

The problems don't start while you're deciding. They start once the plan exists and has to survive a week of a busy chat.

What changes when the plan has its own link

TripSanity takes the plan out of the scroll and gives it one place that's always current. The organizer pastes the plan in — or screenshots the chat messages where it was hashed out and drops those into the AI importer — then corrects the draft and shares a single link. Everyone taps it from the chat, types the trip password and their name once, and sees today, with the current stop and the next one pointed out. Stops check off live with names attached, so "did anyone grab ice?" answers itself. Each stop can carry a meet point, a map link and a what-to-wear note tied to the real forecast. Shared lists — the grocery run, the packing list — take additions from anyone. The Money tab keeps a running tally of who paid for what and works out who owes whom (how it compares to Splitwise). And when you change a stop at 8am, it changes on every phone.

How to use both (this is the actual recommendation)

Who needs which

The chat alone is fine if…

  • It's four to six people and a long weekend
  • The plan fits in one message and won't change
  • Everyone pays their own way
  • You'll all be in the same place the whole time

Add TripSanity if…

  • The group is big, multi-household, or spans three generations
  • The plan has days, times, and places people need to be
  • Something will change mid-trip, and everyone has to find out
  • Costs are shared and someone is going to front the money

Keep the chat. Give the plan a home. One link for the whole group, pinned in the chat you already have — no app, no accounts.

Common questions

Can we just plan a group trip in the group chat?

For a small, simple trip, often yes. It breaks as the group and the plan grow: the plan gets buried, changes arrive as replies, and nobody tracks who paid.

Does TripSanity replace WhatsApp or iMessage?

No — it isn't a chat. Keep talking in the chat, share one TripSanity link there, and let the link hold the plan.

How do I get the plan out of our group chat and into TripSanity?

Screenshot or copy the messages where it was worked out and drop them into the importer. It builds the days and stops; you correct and share.

Do people in the chat need to download anything to use TripSanity?

No — they tap the link, type the trip password and their name. Alerts are opt-in, and on iPhone need the trip on the home screen.

Give the plan a home

Open the live demo — the same screens your guests get when they tap the link in your group chat — or create a free trip and drop in screenshots of the chat.
